History, Uses and Tidbits:
As legend has it, the name Topaz comes from the Sanskrit meaning “fire”. The ancient Egyptians believed that Topaz was coloured with the golden glow of the sun god Ra which made it a very powerful amulet that helped to protect all that was faithful against any harm. For the Romans Topaz was associated with the planet Jupiter who also represented the god of the sun. Blue topaz is very popular because of its brilliant blue coloration and the fact that it is cheaper by carat than other similar crystals such as Aquamarine
In ancient Greek times they believed that Topaz had power to increase their strength and to make a person invisible in times of emergency. It was said to change colour if somebody was in the presence of poisoned drink or food. The most famous piece of Topaz found was in the 17th century Portuguese Crown which was 1,640 carats and it was named “The Braganza”. When it was found it was thought to be a diamond but later it was found to be a colourless Topaz instead. Topaz shares similar qualities to diamonds as it is a very hard gemstone and can be split with a single blow. Because of this, it must be protected from any hard knocks.
