The word Onyx comes from the Green word “Nux” meaning “claw” or “fingernail” because it was found in a flesh colour which represented a fingernail back in that time.
Legend has it that one afternoon Cupid the god of love had cut the fingernails from Venus who was then the divine goddess. While Venus was sleeping, Cupid cut her nails with an arrowhead and left clippings scattered amongst the sand and that the fates turned them into stones. These stones never perished because even though they were no longer a part of the heavenly Venus body, they were still cherished.
Black Onyx was a very popular stone amongst the ancient Romans and Greeks and has been used throughout history to make beads, jewellery, intaglio and cameo carvings.
